Rubbabu!

"Rubbabu toys are made of 100% natural rubber foam and not synthetic rubber. Natural rubber is the sap of the tree which is bio-degradable and renewable. Trees are not cut down or harmed by the extraction of rubber.

Not only is natural rubber flexible and durable, it is also anti-microbial, dust mite resistant, mildew resistant, hypo-allergenic and flame retardant."

We just got in a new shipment of this wonderful "green" toy brand. We even carry their line of educational balls that recently won a Parents' Choice Award!

Shop Local!!

We are excited to be charter members of Our Local Food South Central KS!   As a local business ourselves, we certainly are committed to promoting and carrying local products whenever possible!    Each month, on the 2nd Saturdays, we hold our Fling Markets which feature ONLY local food, hand-crafted and re-purposed items.  In our store, we carry local milk, eggs, cheese, meats, bread, produce, flour and much more.    We also feature local, natural beauty products and gift items.

When you shop local, you invest in your community, in your neighbors, and in yourselves. It is estimated that for every dollar you spend, twice as much will be reinvested in the community by a local store than a national store!  You can enjoy fresh, tasty food!  Plus, you get to find quirky, one-of-a-kind items that are tailored to your needs.  It's a win-win for all of us!

Stop in the store, today and check out our local offerings.  If you are a farmer or a producer and have products that you think might fit our store, please contact us!   Come say Aloha at our July 9th Fling Market Luau!

Sun n' Stuff!

With so many testimonials appearing of the dangers of basking too long in the sun, it's hard to find a sunscreen that's both effective against powerful UV rays and doesn't leave us looking like ghosts after applying. Purple Prairie Botanicals Sun Stuff sun protection is a wonderful way of getting the best of both worlds. As a physical sunscreen (mentioned in our June newsletter) containing Zinc Oxide, it works to block both types of UV rays while moisturizing the skin with helpful minerals. And with a Non-whitening formula, skipping the embarassing post-application pasty appearance is a breeze. Try their lotion form or stick sunscreen today!

Why we don't carry conventional produce

Food for Thought carries ONLY certified organic produce and locally grown, pesticide & chemical free fruits and veggies, a decision made based on our commitment to the highest standards.    Many of our customers have decided to switch to organic produce for a variety of reasons.  Some choose organic due to their efforts to reduce exposure harmful chemicals in their diets.  Others prefer the taste and increased nutrient content that organic produce provides.   Others have compromised immune systems and wish to avoid any synthetic chemicals on their food.

At times, organic does cost more.  Organic farming is labor intensive and production levels are less than conventional produce.  Sometimes, organic produce does not look as pretty as conventional.   Certain varieties of produce are not available year-round.  Conventional produce would allow us to charge less and offer more variety.  However, we'd rather make a few less dollars to provide our customers with products that are not saturated with potentially toxic chemicals or being produced using Genetically Modified Organisms.

We have found many consumers assume ALL natural foods store carry only organic produce.  Many of the countries largest chains carry both.   We recognize there are standards in place to help reduce contamination of organic foods by conventional produce, but we feel it is too easy for cross-contamination to occur.   There is no way to guarantee that a conventional product doesn't co-mingle with organic.  Some might argue that the chance for any chemical transfer is minimal.  We'd rather not risk ANY contamination, especially as research continues to indicate the negative health impacts of various pesticides and herbicides.

We also champion local products.  We do carry local produce that has not been grown with any chemicals or pesticides.  As the summer season arrives, we hope to have more and more local produce overflowing on our shelves!
