Vegan Wednesday! Reboot Your Life!

After watching the documentary Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead that follows Australian businessman Joe Cross as he does a 60 day juice fast and travels around the U.S. talking to Americans about how they eat, I was inspired. Joe's journey was very inspirational, as was the plight of trucker Phil, who was 430 lbs. and suffering from an auto-immune disorder that was very uncomfortable (he had the disorder in common with director Joe Cross). I figured, if a 430 lb. trucker can do it for 60 days with amazing results, surely my husband and I can handle 10 days! So starts our journey on the reboot cleanse.

Days one and two were probably the hardest. We fought a lot of rumbling tummies and headaches. Not to mention total lack of energy. By the middle of day two we decided to incorporate actually eating some raw fruits and veggies, and not just juicing. Was this cheating? I'm not sure, but I do know we still saw results and definitely felt the detox symptoms that you would just doing juice. Thanks to my working at Food For Thought, I am blessed to be surrounded by lots of delicious ORGANIC and LOCAL produce all the time.

Days two and on were not very rough, save for some minor hunger pangs which were quickly quelled by drinking lots of water or juice with greens. I started to feel some of the detox symptoms including flu-like symptoms and my skin breaking out. My husbands stomach wasn't always agreeing with him, but we soldiered on.
We didn't last our full ten days, towards the end of day 7, I had just had enough. I felt good in some ways, but my detox symptoms were making it difficult to keep up with work and what not. We decided that we had given it a strong enough try, especially for our first time. 7 days isn't too shabby as far as I'm concerned.

I detoxed my body, and lost 12 lbs. in the process. My husband lost 7 lbs., which is especially impressive because he's naturally pretty slim.

Neither of us regret a thing. It was a great learning experience, and a good jump start for further attempts at healthier eating. It's a struggle everyday to avoid eating so much processed foods, and avoiding snacking on sugary sweets. You just have to take it one step at a time. Don't beat yourself up if you make a mistake, dust yourself off and try again the next day. Or even the next hour. One hiccup doesn't have to mean you have to keep paying for it.

If you're interested in "rebooting" your life, you should definitely check out this film. If you have Netflix, it's available on instant play and dvd. It's also available for purchase on Joe's website.

Here at Food For Thought, we employees pride ourselves on educating ourselves on nutrition, and we love sharing it. Stop in today and chat with us about what you're doing to improve your health!

Mask Away!

Giving your body some TLC is just the thing to keep you feeling refreshed and healthy during even the hottest days of summer! Here are a few Beauty Dos for rejuvenating your life:

DO a Coconut Milk Hair Mask!

Pour 14 ounces of unsweetened coconut milk in a bowl.
Refrigerate overnight so it's solid.
Apply to dry hair and shampoo out after 20 minutes.

This simple and quick recipe leaves hair so silky and fragrant, it's almost as satisfying as a Pina Colada! Grab a morning bite to eat while it's setting and it becomes the perfect beauty trick before heading out the door to work!

DO
a Living Clay Mask!

Use 1 part dry clay to 3 parts water.
Place together in a glass, ceramic, or
food grade plastic container with
a non-metal, air tight lid.
Mix until all lumps are gone and apply to face or
ingest and drink extra water.

This Calcium Bentonite Clay works to help remove toxins from the body and improve immune system functions. It's a great way to start the day knowing you're on the right track to healthier living!

Try these fun Beauty Dos to look and feel your best!

Did you know that Udi's now makes cookies?! They are available in Chocolate Chip, Oatmeal Raisin and Snickerdoodle. You can find them in our Gluten Free freezers on Aisle 6. Oh and did I mention that they are DELICIOUS?!

I made the mistake of buying a package SOLELY on the fact that I needed the taste fresh in my mind to write this blog. So fifteen minutes later and four cookies down (don't judge me, let's see YOU have willpower with them!), here I am with a (very) satisfied sweet tooth and a positive review. These cookies are hard to put down, I'll warn you of that first of all. They are small but they are very satisfying. Chewy and soft and full of gluten free, nut free and soy free flavor. You will not be disappointed. One of the best parts of this cookie are that they don't crumble when you bite into them like most GF cookies. You actually get to eat a solid cookie, not just a bunch of crumbs at the bottom of the container! Get them on SALE for $3.99 while they last!

Udi's makes a full line of gluten free products including sandwich breads, bagels, pizza crusts, muffins and granola's.
