It's the end of May, the kids are out of school (or will be shortly), the weather is FINALLY getting warm and sunny... Sounds like it's time for a barbecue!!!! With Memorial Day right around the corner (and what we're sure will be a wonderful summer full of fun times hanging around the back patio with friends), all of us at Food for Thought thought it may be helpful to have some guidelines for navigating BBQs safely!
You're safe eating:
- Corn on the cob
- Burgers off the grill (other meats, too, but if they've been marinated (like in BBQ sauce) be wary!)
- Watermelon, strawberries, pineapple... all fruits and veggies!!! Yummy!
- Pure corn tortilla chips (we have lots at the store! Not only are they GF, they taste great and really hold up well to thicker dips, too!)
- Salsa and guacamole
- And, of course, if you would like to have something other than water, lemonade is a safe bet and there are several GF beer options, among others...
Be wary of:
- Potato salad (potatoes are great, the stuff they get mixed with sometimes? Not so much...)
- BBQ sauce, salad dressings, ketchup, mustard (all condiments, really... Better be safe and check the ingredient list! And, if you're a condiment addict like me and can't eat your burger with out ketchup and mustard, bring your own!)
- Beans
- Brats and hotdogs
- Community mixed drinks
Avoid:
- Macaroni salad (unless you made it! Which, by the way, is easy to do with everything available these days!)
- Anything with a bun (or if it was placed on a bun originally...)
Enjoy your barbecues and your Memorial day!!!
