Healthy & Beauty: Topricin

Topricin, over the last several months, has become my best friend. It is a homeopathic pain relief gel... and it actually works! Topricin is creme based and is super moisturizing, without leaving an oily residue. It is paraben, petroleum, fragrance, lanolin, menthol and mineral oil free (so it isn't going to damage your skin and it doesn't smell or leave that burning or tingling sensation like IcyHot). As an added bonus, you can use Topricin in conjunction with regular medications. There are several active ingredients, but the most prominent are aesculus hippocastanum (helps relieve pain in the lower back, hip and spine), arnica montana (contusions, impact injuries), are belladonna (spasms and cramps). Three different variations of Topricin are available:

Topricin Classic is great for joint pain (including arthritis), lower back, neck and shoulder pain, impact injuries, strains, minor burns and insect bites, and helps relieve tendonitis and post-surgical and injection site pain.

Topricin Junior is a modified version of the Classic. In addition to "bumps, bruises and bug bites", impact injuries and strains, Junior also features bellis perennis, which is great for muscle soreness, among other ailments... In other words, it's going to help your child not feel those growing pains quite so much!

And, my personal savior, Topricin Foot Therapy Cream. It helps with nerve pain, gout, heel pain, bunions, injuries, shin splints, sprains, Achilles tendonitis, and Plantar fasciitis. I can personally vouch for this product- over the course of my high school and college careers, I damaged one of my ankles so badly (and so repeatedly) that two tendons literally are made of scar tissue and two small bones cannot heal because they are shattered beyond repair. Sounds painful, right? It is most days, except when I remember to use this cream. It doesn't always make the pain go away (but let's face it- there's a lot of damage, so there's a lot of pain), but it definitely dulls it to the point where I don't realize there's anything wrong with it. It's a lifesaver!!!

Come in to the store and check it out- and ask in the Health & Beauty department for more information about Topricin. Keep checking the blog weekly- we'll be giving a bottle of the Topricin Foot Therapy Cream away soon!

Sweet Talk!

When I learned how to cook, if I wanted to add a touch of sweetness, I would reach for the bowl of white sugar. I didn’t think of the impact on my blood sugar or health, and I certainly didn’t think about how my sugar was made. I will always have a sweet tooth, but I try to incorporate healthier sweeteners into my life. It can be daunting, however, trying to decide which sweetener to use. Here is a short primer of a few of the great ones available.

Vegan Wednesday!

Chia seeds as a VEGAN source of Omega 3s

Chia seeds are growing in popularity and are quickly catching up to flax seeds as the most popular source of Omega fats for vegetarians.

Health Benefits of Chia Seeds:
  • They absorb ten times their weight in water, making them great for staying hydrated.
  • They are easily digestible, and don't need to be ground like flax seed.
  • They block some calories from being absorbed, hence they are a great helper in weight loss.
  • They are high in fiber and healthy oils, so they are great while doing a detox program (or every day!)
  • They contain the highest percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids (60%!)
  • They contain boron which is essential for bone health.
  • They are high in calcium (2 0z. chia contains 600 mg calcium compared to 120 mg in a cup of milk!)
  • They contain 2 times more potassium than bananas.
  • They have 3 times the antioxidants of blueberries.

Chia seeds can be eaten raw, hydrated or cooked. They are helpful for fatigue, weight loss, reducing blod clots, heart disease and diabetes.

Chia seeds are a nutrition powerhouse for those of us who don't eat fish or take a fish oil supplement. Stop in to Food For Thought today to check out our selection! We have chia available in seed and powder form in both bulk and packaged varieties.

Gluten Free Tuesday!

One of the most frequent laments I hear from people recently diagnosed with Celiac disease or a gluten intolerance-- aside from believing they will never be able to enjoy Italian again-- is that they won't be able to enjoy an ice cold beer without subjecting themselves to the associated discomforts inherent to the intolerance. And I am happy to tell these people that not only can they have their beloved pastas and pizzas, they can have their beers too. Main stream breweries are developing gluten-free (GF) options and restaurants are catching on to the importance of carrying beers so their GF patrons are not limited in their drink selections while out with their friends and families. Click "more" for some yummy options for you that, while they are not available at Food for Thought, are available in Wichita.

Manic Monday Recipe: Seitan Saute

The weekend is over and it's back to reality! Each Monday we will post an easy recipe, either for the crockpot, quick fix or five ingredient or less recipe. Here's to eating healthy, simply!

Seitan Saute with Bell Peppers
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 large onion, chopped
3 medium green or red bell peppers, diced
1-11/2 lbs seitan, 1/4 cup of liquid reserved, cut into bite-size chunks
Soy sauce or teriyaki sauce to taste
1.  Heat the oil in a large skillet or stir-fry pan.  Add the onions and saute over medium heat until golden.
2.  Add the bell peppers and seitan and saute over medium-high heat, stirring frequently, until the peppers are tender-crisp and the seitan chunks are touched by golden-brown spots.  Season to taste with soy sauce and pepper and serve.
(This would be great over rice)
