Fluoride-Free!

Lying in the dentist's chair, I still remember the decision between Bubblegum or Grape flavored fluoride rinse. After recently rescheduling an appointment, I recalled not having to make the choice in some time. However, it could be because of the newly shed light on the health risks attributed to fluoride.

According to several researchers, ingesting too much fluoride can lead to the failure in crystallization of enamel on adult teeth. It also acts in a way that lowers the I.Q. of children, according to Dr. Phyllis Mullinex. Because fluoride is accumulated in the body and not secreted, it has the potential to lead to cancer as well. But have no fear, there are several brands of toothpaste that offer fluoride-free alternatives! "Tom's Natural Care Toothpaste" boasts a variety of fluoride-free (and SLS-free) toothpastes! Another fluoride-free alternative; "Dr. Ken's Maximum Care" toothpaste also whitens teeth while protecting them from tartar and plaque! "Burt's Bees", "Spry", "Now's Xyliwhite", and "Jason's" also produce fluoride-free products for maximum dental care!

With many new alternatives to conventional, fluoride filled toothpastes, rest easy knowing that healthier options are waiting!

Fiber Gourmet

If you have never tried the Fiber Gourmet line of pastas and individual serving cakes we offer, you should now! We just received two new flavors of their fettuccine including "Cajun Spice", "Wild Mushroom" as well as lasagna noodles. Each serving contains 130 calories, 1 gram of fat and a whopping 18 gram of fiber!!! So you can eat a large portion and not feel guilty. We also carry a plain fettuccine, rotini and penne. There is a single serve brownie and cinnamon cake that is also quite delicious. They contain 90 calories and 12 grams of fiber. Not too shabby, huh?

Their pastas taste just like regular pasta but with the added fiber so it's a much more health conscious meal. We are currently awaiting arrival of their Lite Crackers. Stay tuned!

Bulk Salts

Just in at Food For Thought: four new bulk salts! Each salt has its own unique properties- here's a guide to help you understand the difference between them all! Keep an eye out for more salts being added to our herb room over the next several weeks!

Hawaiian Red Salt: Alae (volcanic baked red clay) is added to enrich sea salt with iron oxide. Hawaiians use the salt for both seasoning and preserving. The salt has a more mellow and "earthy" flavor, due to the added clay. Hawaiian Red Salt is used to create many of Hawaii's authentic dishes.

Himalayan Pink Salt: This salt comes from the foothills of the Himalayas and is believed to be the purest form of salt- and one of the richest in mineral content. Himalayan pink salt contains over 84 minerals! The salt can be used for healing benefits both externally and internally. It has been known to help relieve arthritis pains, psoriasis and skin rashes when used in baths!

Grey Salt: Quickly becoming one of the most popular culinary salts, grey salt is native to the Brittany region of France. It is sometimes called "celtic salt". Because of less processing, it is also healthier for you because it has a higher mineral content. The taste is also more similar to "regular" salt- this makes it a much easier switch for those looking to use a healthier salt.

Sea Salt Pearls: Pearl salt is ultra-white salt, and is considered an artisan item. It is super salty and is larger than traditional salts- and is absolutely perfect for cooking dishes native to Vietnam and surrounding countries! It can be easily ground up and helps to bring out the flavors in most dishes.
