Fun Events at Food for Thought!

We thought the best way to spend this summer would be to have a bunch of events that are sure to both inform and entertain you and your family and/or friends! Below are the two events coming up in June!

The Basics: Gluten-Free Living
Gluten-Free Living is the first seminar in "The Basics" series. Topics addressed include: What is gluten? Who leads a gluten-free lifestyle? What can you eat on a gluten-free diet? What about supplements and skincare? Food samples will be provided and the first 50 guests registered will receive a free gluten-free gift bag! UPDATE!!! Chipotle will be catering the event! Mmmmm... gluten-free tacos and chips & guac, anyone?
Celiac Disease is estimated to affect one in every 133 Americans, and every one in seven Americans is believed to have a gluten intolerance. Many leading dietitians are recommending a diet that is, at a minimum, gluten restricted. It is highly likely that you, or someone you know, is leading a gluten-free lifestyle (or should be!).
The Gluten-Free Seminar is Thursday, June 17, from 7-8:30 pm. RSVP is required and seating is limited. The event is free!
Annual Ladies' Night Out
Calling all the ladies! It's one of our favorite events of the year, and we know it's one of yours, too! Ladies' Night Out gives you and your friends a chance to come into the store after hours, have a mixed drink, enjoy some special one-night-only savings, and learn lots about all of the different aspects of a healthier, greener lifestyle!
This year the focuses include aromatherapy, skincare, supplements, organic produce, meat(less) options, and a chance to try out some of our kitchen gadgets! Also included are chair massages and makeovers! Guests receive coupons, handouts and can pick up some goodies along the way. Several raffles will be held throughout the night!
Ladies' Night Out takes place on Tuesday, June 29, from 7-9 pm! RSVP is required and space is limited. The event is free! MUST BE 21 or OLDER!!!

Vegan Wednesday!

Moby's Vegan Blueberry Pancakes

ingredients:
1 1/2 cups whole-grain spelt flour
1/2 cup oat bran
1/2 cup wheat bran
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
2 cups plain full-fat soy milk or rice and soy milk blend*
Vegetable oil for cooking
1 cup (1/2 pint) fresh blueberries or frozen, unthawed, plus 1/2 cup fresh blueberries or raspberries for serving
Maple syrup for serving

preparation:

In medium bowl, stir together spelt flour, oat bran, wheat bran, baking soda, and salt. Add soy milk and stir until thoroughly combined.
Brush large nonstick or cast-iron griddle or skillet with oil and heat over moderate heat until hot but not smoking. Working in 3 to 4 batches, pour 1/4 cup batter per pancake onto griddle and press 12 to 15 blueberries into each pancake. Cook until bubbles appear and pop on surface and undersides are golden brown, 3 to 4 minutes. Flip pancakes, then turn off heat and let pancakes continue to cook in pan until undersides are firm and light golden brown, about 3 minutes more. Transfer to plate, berry side up, and keep warm.
Repeat to cook remaining pancakes, oiling and reheating griddle between each batch. Serve pancakes warm with additional berries and maple syrup.

Gluten-Free Tuesday!!!

Reminder: Our "The Basics: Gluten-Free Living" Seminar is on Thursday, June 17!!! Call the store or stop in to register today!!!! Seating is limited and the first 50 guests receive a gluten-free goodie-bag!!!

It's the end of May, the kids are out of school (or will be shortly), the weather is FINALLY getting warm and sunny... Sounds like it's time for a barbecue!!!! With Memorial Day right around the corner (and what we're sure will be a wonderful summer full of fun times hanging around the back patio with friends), all of us at Food for Thought thought it may be helpful to have some guidelines for navigating BBQs safely!

You're safe eating:

  • Corn on the cob
  • Burgers off the grill (other meats, too, but if they've been marinated (like in BBQ sauce) be wary!)
  • Watermelon, strawberries, pineapple... all fruits and veggies!!! Yummy!
  • Pure corn tortilla chips (we have lots at the store! Not only are they GF, they taste great and really hold up well to thicker dips, too!)
  • Salsa and guacamole
  • And, of course, if you would like to have something other than water, lemonade is a safe bet and there are several GF beer options, among others...

Be wary of:

  • Potato salad (potatoes are great, the stuff they get mixed with sometimes? Not so much...)
  • BBQ sauce, salad dressings, ketchup, mustard (all condiments, really... Better be safe and check the ingredient list! And, if you're a condiment addict like me and can't eat your burger with out ketchup and mustard, bring your own!)
  • Beans
  • Brats and hotdogs
  • Community mixed drinks

Avoid:

  • Macaroni salad (unless you made it! Which, by the way, is easy to do with everything available these days!)
  • Anything with a bun (or if it was placed on a bun originally...)

Enjoy your barbecues and your Memorial day!!!
